interventionWhen family and friends realize that their loved one is suffering from addiction, intervention is often necessary to get them the help they need, but the process is painful and difficult even with the hope of recovery as the end goal. For those who have experienced it, the resistance, anger, and abhorrence displayed from a loved one fighting addiction and feeling betrayed by those they love, may feel unbearable. For others, the fear of their loved one’s reaction may be preventing them from taking action – even though they know it needs done.

The dramatic television reality series, Interventionâ„¢, on A&E highlights the struggles of addicts and their families as the addict confronts their addiction. With the intent to raise awareness about addiction and recovery options, this and other shows, such as Dr. Phil, have brought the reality of interventions to the forefront.

Whether a loved one suffers from alcohol or drug addiction, an intervention may be the only way to get them to seek the help they need. For the family of an addict, intervention is often the hardest part. Coupled with a fear of reaction, family members may fear the aftermath of their attempt to help. While intervention may be necessary to get an addict to seek help, addiction recovery and relapse prevention centers are designed to teach life skills to help the addict cope with their feelings and their life as they transition into sobriety.

Intervention can be as hard on the family as watching an addict suffer. Difficult as intervention may seem, your loved one may be waiting for it. Fear of admission and others finding out about their problem or fear of sober life may be holding them back from seeking the addiction recovery help they need.
