teens and drug abuseAn article in Science Daily reports that new research suggests most parents are not only aware of their teenager’s overall substance use, but can accurately evaluate the extent of it.

In the study, 82 -86 percent of parents accurately evaluated the presence of teen cigarette smoking, alcohol use and marijuana use. The parent’s reports corresponded with the teens’ reports of their own substance abuse.

So much for the excuse that parents don’t know the extent to which their teens are using cigarettes, alcohol and drugs! It seems that, despite a few exceptions, many parents do know what their teenager’s substance habits are and their frequency of use.

Parents in the study were less aware of the teen’s substance use, however, if the teen was younger (about 14 or 15), and if the parents did less monitoring of what their teens were doing after school, during the evening and on weekends.

I think that these findings shed some light on the importance of being involved in your teen’s life. It is vitally important to know how they are spending their time and with whom they are hanging out. Parents should also begin thinking about substance use at a younger age.

Teenagers who live in a family atmosphere that has open communication and parental involvement are far less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol. Experimentation with drugs during adolescence is common.

Unfortunately, teenagers often don’t see the link between their actions today and the consequences tomorrow. That is where a strong family relationship can make the difference.

Lastly, the survey found that parents who were caught up in their own issues or problems, whether stressed, feeling depressed or using alcohol more frequently, also made less accurate reports. Obviously, when there is trouble within it is hard to focus on anything else! Substance abuse tends to run in families, however, so if you are struggling…chances are your teens could be too!
