Alcohol affects each person differently. If you don’t believe me, ask any drug and alcohol recovery center that deals with recovering alcoholics. But it doesn’t take a recovering alcohol addict to tell you how they behaved in any given situation while under the influence of alcohol. If you look around you, you can usually see for yourself how people act when they drink alcohol. So, why do guys drink alcohol more often than women and what are the effects of this behavior?
What Does Alcohol Do?
Alcohol consumption can have both short and long term effects on a person’s body. This is due to the amount of alcohol you drink in a given period of time as well as how often you drink alcoholic beverages. What alcohol does is it acts as a depressant, slowing down the brain’s functions. The chemicals in the alcohol can lead to disinhibition. Translation: You become less inhibited in your actions and thoughts because the cells in your brain that usually cause you to make sound judgments have been affected.
Other effects of alcohol on the brain are also going to be contingent upon other factors besides how much the individual has consumed such as: previous drinking history, physical and mental state of the individual at the time that the alcohol is consumed (i.e. someone who is depressed versus someone who is happy), the genetic background of the individual as well as the surrounding environment in which the alcohol is consumed (i.e. a party).
One of the major effects of alcohol on men is that it may and can cause erectile disfunction due to the slowed central nervous system response and blood not being able to circulate the way it should. In other men, it may cause increased emotional tendencies towards physical violence and in other men it can have a more calming effect.
For the Guys Only
Studies have shown that men are more apt to drink alcohol and be more prone to alcoholism than women. The number of reasons for this are innumerable if you ask any one person. One possibility may have to do with societal norms. For instance, in America, males are raised to be tough and not as emotional as women. Therefore, for some men, alcohol may be a way to relieve some of the emotional tension that they cannot otherwise display.
