Drug rehab is a very strong statement and to most addicts it has a dual meaning. It could mean relief from living years in a literal hell or it could be the scariest two words they have ever heard. It all depends on which personal plateau they are on in their addiction.
The thought of even a possibility of living drug free is one that most addicts both embrace and detest at the same time. For many addicts it is the fear of a painful withdrawal that scares them most. It is not what many people believe that addicts simply do not want to stop getting high because the truth is that by this time most are not getting high anyways, they are just getting right and stopping what can in many cases be a more than uncomfortable withdrawal process.
Many addicts have attempted drug rehab before and have failed. It is likely that if they attempted and failed that they may have been forced into recovery by law enforcement officials because they were arrested or forced by family members.
An addict needs to want sobriety for himself. He needs to be done with the lies, the everyday hustle to pay for his fix, and most of all his loss of respect and dignity within his circle of friends and family. Addicts must also be aware that the skills to live again can and will be provided but that this is a lifetime battle they will face themselves with daily. This is all part of the relapse prevention process that we teach at the Mark Houston Alcohol and Drug Recovery Center.
Sadly enough by the time that an addict reaches the steps of a drug rehab center, they are likely convinced that there is no longer any hope for them when in fact the complete opposite is true. An addict, with the proper environment and program can be not only taught how to live a clean and sober life but also how to enjoy one.
