According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times,

Men lacking in vitamin D have more than double the normal risk of a heart attack, a study says, one of many suggesting the vitamin is crucial to good health.

When it comes to our health, we are quick to point out the things that are bad for us such as alcoholism and drug use, but when it comes to the things that will actually help to improve the quality of our lives, we suddenly find ourselves at a loss for words. Medical researchers are hard at work to find a drug that will help to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other diseases as well. So, what’s the solution? Sunshine.

Twenty Minutes Can Go a Long Way

According to the medical findings of several studies that were conducted, results showed that healthy doses of vitamin D (i.e. twenty minutes in the sun) are crucial in maintaining good health in middle-aged men. In the past, vitamin D was viewed primarily:

…as a protective agent against diseases of the bone, such as osteomalacia and osteoporosis. Current recommendations for the vitamin are based on preventing these disorders and call for a relatively small intake- a minimum of 400 international units, or IUs, per day, and perhaps twice that for the elderly, who may not get outdoors as often.

Approximately 869,000 Americans die of heart disease each year, according to the American Heart Association. Studies done in the past suggest that low levels of vitamin D may lead to a buildup of calcium in atherosclerotic plaques on the walls of arteries, thereby increasing the risk of heart attacks. S for men who care about their health, evidence suggests that you may want to do more than simply chug a glass of milk every now and again.

  1. i already knew the sun is good for the health! But, what about the skin cancer? Isn´t it dangerous for this disease?

  2. thanks for commenting, diego :) I’m sure that, much like anything else, too much of something is never a good thing…
