Is it time for rehab? When a person is abusing an illegal drug such as cocaine it can be easy to recognize when the addiction gets out of control. However when dealing with alcohol the lines aren’t always so clear. Most of us drink socially and there is no harm in that. When does alcohol use become alcohol abuse?

The Signs of Addiction

The transition from use to abuse is a slow one, so slow that we may not recognize the signs until something tragic happens. Only then, with hindsight, do we realize the warnings were clear. A typical abuser is someone who:

  • Abandons relationships
  • Loses his job due to poor performance or excessive absenteeism
  • Injures others
  • Suffers personality changes
  • Gets angry and defensive when cautioned about drinking
  • Does nothing for pleasure other than drink

The signals are not limited to alcohol abuse. They are typical of any drug addiction. If you know someone who is exhibiting these signs, it is time to look into drug and alcohol recovery options.

The Road to Addiction Recovery

Often the hardest thing about getting an addict into alcohol recovery is his resistance. He doesn’t want to give up his one pleasure and may feel that to admit he is an addict is to admit he is a failure.

Even after completing an alcohol recovery program, many men need additional time in a recovery center to transition from a medical facility back to their lives. At Mark Houston Recovery, our follow-up drug rehab program is designed to help the addict with that transition.

Our extended care program is designed to help men in alcohol recovery learn the life skills that will help them stay sober for good. Alcohol rehab is just a first step and further therapy significantly aids relapse prevention and permanent recovery.
