Giving your child the gift of self-confidence is a good way to ensure he or she is strong enough to say “no” to drugs, despite peer pressure. If his or her relationship with you is open and honest, the likelihood that he or she will turn to you for advice is much greater. A mutually respectful relationship can also be helpful, as a growing body of literature shows that losing the respect of their parents is a strong drug use deterrent for teenagers.

Leading by example is also important in preventing teenage drug abuse. Parents who drink and smoke regularly and irresponsibly are standing on fairly weak ground when dealing with a teenager who drinks and smokes. Explain to your teenager how hard it is to quit smoking, and teach him or her to understand that drinking alcohol can enhance the flavor of a meal (when drunk responsibly, and when you are mature enough), rather than being the reason for a party. Some parents may find that allowing their teenagers to have a small glass of alcohol on special occasions will remove the mystique associated with drinking, thereby reducing the likelihood of misuse. Be sure that doing that is legal where you live, though.

Talk with your teenagers and let them know that their view is important and respected. Listen to their fears and help them to develop confidence in their own opinions and actions. If you are concerned about your teenager, talking to an alcohol or drug counselor may help you to keep your child drug free.
