It seems like the issue of drugs is something we hear about everywhere these days including the news and in the schools. It makes you wonder just how back the drug problem really is in the United States. It is believed that more than 3 million people in the United States have a problem with using drugs. This includes children, youths, and adults.

More cocaine is consumed annually in the United States each year than any other country in the world. As a result the Federal government has stepped in initiated harsher penalties for those caught with illegal drugs in their possession whether they have an intent to use it themselves or they plan on selling it.

Yet in many instances this has led to more creative ways of hiding the drugs. There has also been the introduction of more dangerous drugs that can lead a person to become addicted with just one use. Statistically, the number of people using drugs in the United States has increased in the past several decades. Yet the number of people dying from the use of these drugs has decreased due to advances in the medical field.

To help reduce the number of people in the United States with drug problems, there has to be reinforcement from all angles. Children need to be taught from a very early age that drugs aren’t an effect way to have fun or to cope with life. Parents that use drugs need to have their children placed in other homes until they successfully complete treatment. There also needs to be longer prison sentences for known drug dealers to deter others from doing it.
