If you’re a parent of a teenager, you’re probably concerned about keeping your kid(s) from experimenting with drugs. One of the best ways to reduce the risk of your teen taking illegal drugs is to ensure that they understand the risks. Here are 5 reasons not to use drugs that you can share with your teen.

  • Side effects. Illegal drugs have “desirable” effects and “undesirable” effects. Every drug, legal or illegal, has unwanted side effects, some of them dangerous.
  • You. As a parent, you are responsible for requiring your child to meet certain behavior standards. Make sure your kids know what the rules are and what the consequences of breaking the rules are.
  • Long term health effects. Many teens think they are invincible, so they’re not worried about health problems, but it doesn’t hurt to explain that drug abuse can ruin their health for life.
  • The law. There are serious consequences for users and dealers of illegal drugs. Make sure that your teen knows what the consequences are. If they think they can “get away with it” you might want to acquaint them with how police track and catch drug users.
  • Death. Playing around with illegal drugs is not harmless fun. The stakes are high – your teen’s life. Make sure they know that.
