bottleofpills-50.jpgI think we can all agree that drugs are bad. Drugs ruin relationships, lives and sometimes the chance at being successfully rehabilitated into society (depending on each individual situation). Sometimes it’s hard to face the fact that no one wants to hire someone who has had an extensive history of drug use. It doesn’t look good for business, and owners may be afraid of that particular person becoming a substance abuser again while on the job. This is why so many employers now conduct drug screening prior to interviews. Some employers even do random drug screening throughout the course of the employee’s relationship with that particular company.

Although the impact of drugs on society is difficult to quantify, the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) reported in 2002 that the economic cost of drug abuse to the United States was $180.9 billion. Additionally, the economic impact of drug abuse on businesses whose employees abuse drugs can be significant because many drug abusers are unable to find jobs and those who do have difficulty remaining employed. For those employers who do hire drug abusers, they could be putting other people at risk, especially in jobs where even a minor degree of impairment could be catastrophic such as: airline pilots, train operators and bus drivers.

Quest Diagnostics, a nationwide firm that conducts employee drug tests for employers, reported that 5.7 percent of the drug tests they conducted on individuals involved in employment-related accidents in 2004 were positive. Businesses have to be careful when hiring employees because those who use drugs will sometimes steal money, supplies or other equipment in order to purchase drugs. There is also the risk of an employee not showing up for work, which if it becomes routine, can cause a business to lose productivity. There are many drug abusers who are trying to seek help for their problems. At Mark Houston Recovery, we have several substance abuse recovery programs to help encourage residents’ addictions. This is highly necessary if we ever want to improve workplace conditions.
