Liquid Ecstasy, Scoop, Easy Lay, Georgia Home Boy, Grievous Bodily Harm, Liquid X, and Goop. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, these are just some of the street names for the drug Gamma Hydroxybutyric ghb-bottle-70.jpgAcid…better known as “GHB” to many party-goers as well as victims of date rape.

A Little History

GHB is a naturally-occurring substance found in the central nervous system, wine, beef, small citrus fruits, and almost all living creatures in small amounts. In the United States, it is currently regulated and sold by Jazz Pharmaceuticals under the name Xyrem (Wikipedia). In medical settings, GHB was used as an anesthetic to treat conditions such as depression narcolepsy and alcoholism as well as to improve athletic performance.

GHB can come in one of two forms: an odorless, colorless liquid or a white powder material. It is usually ingested through a liquid and has most commonly been seen as having been mixed with alcohol. Over the years, GHB has become a popular “clubbing” drug and can be found among dance clubs along with ecstasy and marijuana. Because it can be made relatively easily, local distribution is common.

Think Twice

If you’re thinking of going out with friends to a bar or to a club, think twice before you go. GHB is most commonly known as the “date rape” drug. It is colorless and odorless and can be slipped into drinks easily without being noticed. Some of the consequences of using GHB include:

  • drowsiness
  • dizziness or nausea
  • unconsciousness
  • seizures
  • respiratory depression
  • coma

If you still plan to go out with your friends, make sure you do it safely and are smart about it. Most victims of GHB are women. If you are at a restaurant or bar (or any social setting), and you order a drink, make sure you can see it being made. When you are at a crowded social gathering and you are holding your drink, make sure you hold it close to your body and if possible, place one of your hands casually over the top of the drink to protect it from anyone who may be trying to pour something into it.
