In a new study performed by British Doctors, Marijuana has been found to induce temporary phsycotic symptoms in some patients. The study was performed using 15 healthy individuals who were given small doses of active ingredients from marijuana (a.k.a. Cannabis). The researchers then took brain scans of these subjects to monitor the effects.

The problematic component was tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the component of marijuana which is what gives the “high” that drug abusers use marijuana for.

Scientists have known that THC caused serious negative effects, however the new study found negative effects that scientists weren’t yet sure about. The scientists found that THC essentially interferes with the section of the brain associated with paranoia. This interference in some patients causes delusional paranoia, hallucinations, and other psychotic symptoms.

One of the doctors involved in the study, Dr. Philip McGuire, from King’s College, London, said that “We’ve long suspected that cannabis is linked to psychoses, but we have never before had scans to show how the mechanism works.”

A related study was underway to determine the effects of marijuana on schizophrenia patients, but the study was stopped because the effects of marijuana of schizophrenics was so severe.

While scientists still have much to learn about both how the brain functions and the effects of marijuana, it’s quite certain that marijuana is a very dangerous drug with serious effects on the human mind and body.
