What do Ecstasy, Meth, and a Massive Blow to the Head Have in Common?

University of Florida researchers say that the damage done to the brain from taking so-called club drugs like Ecstasy and other forms of methamphetamine is comparable to a massive blow to the head.
That’s right. Popping a few pills can have the same effect on your brain as receiving a sharp blow to the head. Brain cells are damaged, leading to cell death, memory loss and possibly irreversible brain damage.
Some people may think that a few hits of Ecstasy every weekend at a party is not as serious as abusing heroin or cocaine. The drug leaves your system after a while and you get back to your regular work-week – right? Wrong! These findings prove that permanent damage is indeed being done.
This news is potentially a big deal because about 1.3 million people over the age of 12 reported using methamphetamine in the previous month, according to the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. In 2004, more than 12 million Americans reported having tried the drug, the survey’s findings show.
So, next time someone offers you a party drug, think about the damage you are doing to yourself. It would essentially be the equivalent of inflicting a traumatic brain injury on yourself. Not a pretty picture!
