The 12 Step Program began in 1935 as a recovery support group for alcoholics. There seem to be 12 Step “programs” for people addicted to just about everything:

  • A 12 Step program for email addicts
  • A 12 Step program for Blackberry addicts and their orphans
  • A 12 step program to achieving happiness
  • A 12-Step Program To Break America’s Oil Addiction
  • A 12 Step program for quitting smoking
  • A 12 step program for sexual addicts
  • There’s even a 12 step program for dealing with discontinuous textures for those in the computer animation industry.

Some are serious, some are light-hearted. Today, a “12 step program” is synonymous with overcoming the challenges that plague us.

There’s a good reason why the original 12 step program has had such widespread social acceptance since its beginning—and that’s because it really does work. The original 12 step program addresses much more than just “alcoholism.” The 12 step program is designed to uncover and deal with the deep-seeded issues that cause people to drink… or use drugs… or overeat… or work too much…

The destructive actions we engage in are a way to medicate what is really bothering us. Working through the 12 step program—really working through it—is a lifetime process. And like any process, it takes time to make these productive, healing thoughts a part of your natural thought process.
