If moderation is a virtue, addiction might be said to be an extreme. It is an extreme craving for something, and in most cases, whether what you desire is harmful or not, the desire itself can be harmful. For, again, if virtue is to be found in moderation, then we must remember the words of the soul giant Barry White: “I’ve heard people say that too much of anything Is not good for you Baby.” Though the line ends with White saying that he isn’t sure he believes that, I for one, do.
CNN has a posting on drug addiction that does a great job summing up addiction. The article states:
You may be hooked emotionally and psychologically. You may have a physical dependence, too. If you have a drug addiction — whether to a legal or illegal drug — you have intense cravings for it. You want to use the drug again and again. When you stop taking it, you may have unpleasant physical reactions.
While not everyone who uses drugs becomes addicted, many people do. Drug addiction involves compulsively seeking to use a substance, regardless of the potentially negative social, psychological and physical consequences. Certain drugs, such as narcotics and cocaine, are more likely to cause physical dependence than are other drugs.
The article concludes by reminding us that we can seek help from places and people such as drug and alcohol recovery centers, family, friends, and doctors. Addiction is beatable, especially with the help of outside sources. There is proof enough of this in the fact that there are numerous people who have indeed kicked their own addictions.
