David Duchovny…Sexaholic

Addiction has many faces. It’s most recent:Agent Mulder. Yes it’s true, like many celebrities before him, David Duchovny is struggling with addiction. The ironic twist is that Duchovny’s addiction doesn’t come in a bottle, a pill, or in a needle: Duchovny is a sex addict.

Apparently the actor has had a long history with sex addition, he has even hinted about it publicly in the past. The actor was interviewed months before his recent stint in rehab as saying: “Twelve years ago, I would have been hard-pressed to understand why I’d want to be involved sexually with one person this long.” He further declared: “There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging the panoply of life’s rich experience. You can’t control your mind. Why would you want to? You can’t feel guilty about being alive, about being a man, about feeling attracted. You can only control your actions.”

Apparently Duchovny has hit some sort of low point and finally decided to check himself in to a rehabilitation facility. A sex addiction seems almost too odd and funny to be true, but it just goes to show that pleasure in all forms can be addictive. If you have the tendencies of an addictive personality all things bear the possibility of becoming less a pleasure and more of a burden. The best medicine is always prevention, but if it is too late the next best thing seems to be support sought in the form of professional recovery programs.

  1. I use to think that the spiritual malady that they talk about in the Big Book of AA was an alckie problem, now it can be seen to exist in all.

  2. Gerard,
I’m not quite sure what you mean by “spiritual malady,” are you referring to the fact that all addictions have some sort of psychological root?

  3. You could use whatever term works for you: “spiritual” “psychological.” I figured most who visit this blog could benefit from either!

  4. I almost forgot: I think that this root is deeper then most think; so, David will need to do some really deep inventory work; first to understand that his sex problem is no different then a crack cocaine problem.

  5. Gerard,
I agree that addictions are pretty much the same, the inability to tell one’s self “no” seems no different across the board. I agree with you that addiction is more then physical or mental cravings and must stem from deeper desires to escape the self. Thank you for your input Gerard.

  6. Absolutely. You said it better then I could. I was just thinking this morning that although Ive got some time away from my last drink - just staying away from alcohol will never be my permanent solution; like the Big Book says: It was only a beginning. So, I have to incorporate what Ive learned from the 12 steps, therapy, eating correctly, exercise; but most of all - I believe on top of and that which is responsible for anything positive in my life and the life of others around me is… a constant checking and development of my intention towards what I am doing. I could go and do and zoom around all day and night and it might appear to everyone that I’m doing well, but if my intention on why I am doing whatever it is that I am doing is not right, i.e selfish, dishonest, self-seeking - then it means nothing. Everything I do in my life I believe today is based upon the first intention of the day when I wake up. If that is proper, then my chances of having a healthy day are in a proper perspective; and yes, that means being 100% honest with “self.”

I know this might not be relevant to this topic but I thought it may?

Take it easy and thanks for the blog site

  7. Gerard,
I completely agree with what you are saying. I love philosophy and what you are saying sound like the ethics of Kant. Basically he said you can do whatever “good” you want to do, but the only thing that makes something really and truly “good” is if you have good intentions and a pure heart behind your actions. I like what you said about waking up and trying to have a positive goal in mind, if you can keep focusing on that positive goal you are bound to achieve it. Do you find it easier over time? I find that doing good builds upon itself and becomes easier over the long run, even though it is still a battle, if you can win it day by day you seem to get the momentum on your side. Thanks again for your insights, I really have enjoyed reading what you have to say.

  8. Hi Christopher,

This is fun, I really enjoy this: these simple “fun’s” in life. I guess I just get more and more turned off as time passes by looking outside of myself for any lasting pleasures. I mean I really enjoy all things [if] I’m aware and present (in the now) to enjoy it all - but I understand how everything is constantly changing moment to moment - and there is only a single conscious mind stream right here and now to continues on… that survives all the ups in life… all the downs in life…. all the pleasures …all the pains.

So, the moment I think that I finally got what I craved so much to have “poof” I missed it, because nothing is ever going to be what I thought it was. Its there, but just not in the way I thought it was; or, in the way I perceived it to be. I guess that’s why we can all enjoy things: Because they do change. Imagine that nothing changed. If nothing changed then the world would just freeze and nothing could happen, including love, or joy, or friends, or sobriety, etc.

I like Kant: Although he did say never lie. I’m not quite there yet, but its a worthwhile intention to build on.

Its been a pleasure Christopher, thanks!!!!

    G

  9. This is crazy is this true it almost seems like it is made up , and if it’s true you think he would stay away from his new tv series where he plays a sex addict writer. it almost sounds like his show who would have thought it is so close to his real life.
