If you ever wonder how distance runners become so good at running 10+ miles, it’s because they train almost every day, conditioning their bodies so that they’ll have the stamina to endure 26 mile runs through woods and over hills in all sorts of weather. Running is, perhaps, one of the most difficult sports to participate in to this day because of the enormous amount of mental as well as physical energy needed.
Similarly, drug and alcohol recovery is similar to the sport of running. For many recovering addicts, the rehabilitation could, in effect, be considered part of the “training” that is needed for the actual recovery. At reputable drug and alcohol rehab centers, staff members know and realize that the road to recovery is a long one. You don’t just go through a long and difficult battle with drug and alcohol addiction to then enter into rehab for a short period of time and suddenly find yourself cured of your affliction. Conversely, the road to recovery after rehab is forever.
The Path to Permanently Overcoming Drug Abuse
Mark D. Houston established the Mark Houston Recovery Center, a private residential center outside of Austin, Texas where adult men can reside for 90 consecutive days after having been treated in drug addiction rehab programs. The 3-month program that Mark Houston has created springs from his professional background working in major alcohol and drug addiction rehab centers.
Today, many drug and alcohol rehab facilities across the United States are switching to 90-day drug and alcohol rehab programs similar to that of Mark Houston’s. Drug rehab is temporary; however, the road to recovery, to living a drug-free/sober life is forever. As Mark Houston said,
“The purpose of the Mark Houston Recovery Center is to provide a safe, secure environment free of alcohol and drugs for a period of 90 days for the adult male alcoholic/addict who wishes to recover and experience permanent sobriety. Our belief is that alcoholism and drug addiction are lifelong, chronic, progressive diseases which demand a lifelong set of practices as a way of living if we are to experience permanent recovery. Our commitment to our residents is this: we will provide a set of life skills and spiritual practices which will be incorporated and assimilated into their minds and hearts and allow them to recreate and reclaim their lives.”

Brilliant Article that hits the nail on the head! Many Addicts mistakenly enter treatment/rehab thinking that’s the cure to their addiction or the solution to all their problems.
But Rehab is only the beginning. It provides you with a safe environment and the necessary support and guidance to start you on your road to recovery.
But it’s what you do once you leave that really counts. It’s about using all you’ve learned at Rehab, building a whole new set of habits, and creating a new lifestyle once you leave - that will determine whether you progress on your journey of recovery or relapse back to your addictive ways.
