If you have never heard of the Carrollton bus collision, I highly recommend you check out Wikipedia’s article on it. Without getting into too much detail, let me ask you a question. What prison term (or otherwise) would you sentence a man to, who, after driving down the wrong lane kills 27 people in a church bus, who afterwords blows a .24 (well over the legal alcohol limit), and is a repeat drunk driver? Try 16 years, of which 10 were served. This is fact my friends. This happened in 1988 in Carroll county Kentucky.
Why are we so lenient on drunk drivers? I can tell you from first hand experience as a former Police officer, that charging someone with a DUI and making it stick is almost a miracle. There are so many “outs” and so much paperwork, that very few people actually pay for this crime…but why? The reason I always heard is that this is a crime everyone commits. Other officers, judges, businessmen, and the local yokels (like Larry Mahoney, the murder of 27 in the Carollton accident) all love to get drunk, and they all drive. That is why it is such a pain to charge with DUI. The comedian Dave Attell joked that pot wasn’t legal because pot users weren’t out there effecting daily life like alcoholics, by which he meant drunk driving accidents, brawls, and the like. The sad part is, there is a great deal of truth to what he said. Get the confederacy of dunces together in support of anything, and it will become legal, and will not be morally reprehensible.

To believe that anyone who kills 27 people does not “pay” for that, jail time or not, is a bit short sighted. That said, the enforcement of our laws is pretty much a joke.
