Celebrities have always had the ability to grab our attention. They speak out politically, raise awareness for charities and of course promote their own careers. Recently, however, it is their personal behavior that seems to grab every headline on the newsstand.

Britney Spears checks in and out of rehab. Keith Urban, Lindsey Lohan, Jesse Metcalfe and designer Marc Jacobs all very publicly checking themselves into various rehab programs as well. Is this just another Hollywood fad? Or have stars realized yet another successful way to increase their exposure and jumpstart their careers? I don’t think so.

Hollywood and its abuses are notorious. Drug and alcohol abuse among the privileged in our society is unfortunately not a new thing. Even entering into rehab is not a new idea. What was different back then was that people hid their problems with alcohol and drugs. Movie stars were said to be “injured” or checked into a hospital due to “exhaustion or dehydration.” A problem with addiction was something that just wasn’t talked about.

The vices may not be new, but the way Hollywood’s addictions are being handled is! Stars are speaking out publicly about their struggles. Instead of hiding behind euphuisms like “exhaustion,” they are admitting to checking into rehab facilities. Country superstar Keith Urban even stayed in treatment for 60 days longer than planned to ensure his sobriety was solid before leaving. He also spoke very openly about his treatment online and in television interviews.

Bringing the topic of addiction and treatment to the forefront of American conversation can only prove to be positive in the long run. Hopefully people who are considering seeking treatment for their addictions will feel a little less stigmatized now that their “heroes” in Hollywood have gone through it as well.
