Road Signs That Read: “Warning; Alcoholic Xing”

Drinking and driving seems like nothing new. However, it is something that police officers are made more than aware of as the weekends near. For most Americans, drinking alcohol is seen as something that everyone does. When you turn 21, the thing to do is to go out to your favorite bar (should 21-year-olds even have favorite bars?) and do a few rounds of shots before hitting the road. But drinking alcohol deserves much more than just our attention; it deserves some sort of action.
Alcohol addiction and dependency is still one of the biggest problems Americans face in the wonderful world of drug and alcohol abuse. In fact, every year, there are over hundreds of cases reported in which someone was either hurt, seriously injured or killed as a result of alcohol. If you get involved in a car accident because you or your friends consumed too much alcohol and you are able to walk away, you might be able to laugh about it later, but alcoholism is no laughing matter.
Alcoholism is actually more than just an addiction; it is actually a very dangerous disease. It’s the inability to control the consumption of alcohol and an almost preoccupation with getting alcohol. (That’s why it is called alcohol dependency.) Alcoholism is a disease that is progressive, meaning that it will only get worse over time if it is not treated. Without treatment, this disease can actually be fatal.
Alcoholism isn’t only something that affects adults; anyone can easily become an alcoholic. So the next time you go to a party or relax after a stressful day at work, take a moment to think about why you choose to consume an alcoholic beverage. Are you doing it to escape a problem? If you are, you may find yourself creating a much bigger one instead.
