The Cure for Drug Addiction is More Drugs…isn’t it?

If you have ever been out with friends who drink alcohol, you may have heard that if you are ever suffering from a hangover, the answer is to drink more alcohol. The reasoning behind this is that your body has gotten accustomed (within a short period of time) to consuming a large quantity of alcohol. Therefore, you can’t just stop cold turkey; you have to sort of ween yourself off of it so as to lower the not-so-flattering side effects. If you think about it, this same methodology is applied to those who are suffering from the effects of drug withdrawal.
Believe it or Not?
Personally, I’m not so convinced that the answer to solving drug problems is to use more drugs to counter the side effects. I don’t totally disagree either. If I may play devil’s advocate here, we’ve all seen how those who are trying to overcome dependency on one type of drug then turn to another drug and develop an addiction to it instead. This is best exemplified through the number of people who have been admitted for prescription drug rehab over the years.
According to Time,
When methadone was first introduced 24 years ago, it was hailed as a magic bullet aimed at the heart of heroin addiction. A neat, clean medical solution to a social problem. It has proved to be something less than that. Methadone is a treatment, not a cure, for addiction, and an imperfect one at that.
So, if it seems that using drugs only amplifies the problem with drug addiction, then what else can we fall back on?
