The Stars that Burned Out

I recently was thinking about all the famous people who have died as a result of their addictions. It’s a sad topic, but I was reminded of just how big a toll addiction can take when I looked at the list of drug-related deaths on Wikipedia. The list contains cases of actual overdoses, or people who died from long term side effects of drug and alcohol use, such as liver damage. I feel that this leaves out a large group of people who died, perhaps not directly from drugs, but as a result of them (people like Kurt Cobain, whose drug addictions most likely lead to his inevitable demise).

What is it about success that breeds drug use? I have read that countries with the highest income are the same countries with the highest suicide rates. I have also read that the converse is true, with Australia’s Aborigines having a 0% suicide rate. The reason given for these figures is that when we reach the heights of success and find that simply having lots of money, lots of sex, and lots of drugs doesn’t bring us the happiness we though it would, it makes people’s lives feel empty. In the case of celebrities, I think that once they realize that professional success and fame do not equal a genuine enjoyment of life, they start to turn those large piles of cash in to large piles of cocaine and heroin, among others. They always say the best cure is not to start, but if it is too late, a change of mindset, a change of attitude, and help in the drug recovery process are all important.

  1. There’s a reason it’s called inTOXICation. It’s self-induced poisoning with side-effects which are pleasant. For a while. They should do a series of pictures of before and after for dead pop stars, right up until the time of their death. Might help de-glamourise this ‘lifestyle’.

There’s a reason they call some drugs ’sh*t’, too, y’know!
