There is a new epidemic that has hit the country. No, it’s not the bird flu, or a bad strain of e-coli. It’s the phenomenon of dancing and in the past few years the interest of this sport has begun to spread like California wildfires. There are so many different aspects that must be incorporated into dancing before one can even attempt to grace their presence at an audition, but one of the most important is the “look.” Dance is often linked with acting because each piece that a person performs is meant to tell a story. And just as the plot, and characters add substance to a story, things like costumes, shoes, and technique add substance to dance.
Dancewear has evolved from the staple tights and tutu combo into glitter, glam, and sophistication depending on the story being told. From watching television shows like So You Think You Can Dance, it’s quite clear that in order to be considered good at your craft, one must attend, no not band camp; dance camp. These camps are no piece of pie. They are filled with hard work, sweat, tears and the most creative and snazzy outfits known to man. When it’s 100 degrees outdoors and you are flipping and spinning non-stop, the right outfit is essential for your survival. Thus, many participants showcase dance camp dancewear, which is particularly made to keep the dancers cool, in both senses of the word.
But camp is like the preschool of dance. If you’ve mastered your basic steps and feel you are ready to bring out the big guns, then dance intensives are the next best thing. But be ready to wobble home, because after an intensive training, the muscles in your legs slowly melt to Jell-O. Trust me, I know and I’ve only ever danced in my living room.
So if you have been bitten by this bug of dance make sure you’ve got your look down. Because in dance just as in a written plot, without the look, your story will fall flat.
