When you are in the midst of recovering from a drug or alcohol addiction, it is easy to focus on everything you need to do mentally to beat that beast. There are therapy sessions, meditation hours and mantras you can repeat for strength.
What is often overlooked at drug rehab centers however, are the life skills that an addict needs to master before returning home. Often the home and routines left behind were not the healthiest. Addiction has a funny way of causing people to ignore even the most common practices of health, hygiene and everyday living.
That is why our drug and alcohol recovery program at Mark Houston Recovery stresses the importance of acquiring these life skills for the addict in recovery.
Stick to a Schedule
Having a disciplined routine is key for an addict in recovery. Waking up at the same time every day or enjoying a few moments of meditation or prayer every morning before breakfast. are the types of routines act as anchors throughout the day. They can help form healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
Routines also help keep a recovering addict grounded when temptation comes around. If you already know that your routine after work consists of a healthy dinner and a jog around the neighborhood, then it is easier to say “no†when your co-workers ask you to the bar after work.
Financial Sobriety
It is important to learn fiscal responsibility as well during a recovery program. Oftentimes, an addiction brings financial hardship to a family. Digging out of that hole can be a daunting task – but it can be done!
Learning how to incorporate good money management skills into your daily life is the best way to start.
Strong Body, Strong Mind
When you learn the ins and outs of your body – how organs and everything work together – it becomes hard to abuse such an amazing machine. Learning proper nutrition and hygiene make it even harder. A solid exercise program including weight training and cardio could make it hardest yet.
A healthy body is a happy one. Proper nutrition gives you the energy you need to accomplish your daily activities. Good hygiene makes you feel confident.
Exercise can not only reshape your body, but also releases endorphins into your bloodstream which make you feel happy.
