Over the next several weeks we’ll be posting about the 12 Spiritual Laws that our residents learn to understand and practice throughout their 90 day stay at the Mark Houston Recovery Center.
#2 The Spiritual Law of Caring
The Spiritual Law of Caring is based around the principal that what you deeply care about, you can achieve. If you don’t truly care about living a permanent life of sobriety, you will never achieve this. This is the reason that it is so critical to develop a vision of your life after sobriety that you are truly passionate about achieving.
The law of caring is powerful. If you deeply care about your own life and health and understand sobriety to be a way to achieve your best life, any life you choose is possible.
Mark’s Experience with The Spiritual Law of Caring
This law was a tough one for me to learn. I spent countless hours trying to help alcoholics and addicts whose ACTIONS showed me consistently they did not care about getting clean and sober. I was trying to get them clean and sober for my own selfish reasons.
Many family members could benefit from understanding this law. We can lead the horse to water but we can’t make the horse drink the water.
If an alcoholic or drug addict’s actions indicate they do not care about getting sober then I can’t and won’t care. The flip side is if their actions show they care about getting sober I will go to any length to assist them in that process.
