The single most important event for most men who get moved into recovery is the family stops enabling. One of the aspects of the disease of addiction is the users inability to see they have a problem. If that is the case, as it often is, the family easily sees there is a problem and hopefully pursues professional help to guide them through the process of getting help for the addicted person.
One of the unique aspects of chemical dependency is the inability of the person with the problem to really understand they have a problem since the normal daily drinking and drug use feels normal to them. It is easy for the family members to see this is abnormal. That is why it is imperative the family or the person who has some degree of power move forward with guidance to get help for the addict/alcoholic.
Once the family has begun going down that path it is also important, whenever possible, to not let the person with the problem make decisions about the solution. This seems easy to see on paper but at Mark Houston Recovery we are constantly amazed at families who call us to reveal that they are listening to the solutions the active alcoholic/addict is presenting to them. Of course their solution is always the easier softer way and seldom ever works. The mind that creates the problem is not the place to go to find the solution.
