Making Sobriety A Priority

Recovering from an addiction to alcohol or drugs is one of the hardest things that a person will ever have to do. Sometimes, in embarking upon this challenge, one loses sight of the real goal in quitting drinking or using drugs. It should be remembered that sobriety is the number one priority. The 1st Step out of the 12 Steps involves admitting that we are powerless over our addiction. However, this shouldn't mean that we don't have the power to overcome our addiction. The powerlessness refers to the fact that alcoholism and drug addiction is a disease, affecting those who are genetically predispositioned to it. But people in general are determined, powerful beings. If we are determined enough, if we set out to achieve something above all else, most likely we can do it. Sobriety may seem like a distant, far off goal for those who haven't yet begun recovery, and that's understandable. But when we really decide to do whatever it takes to become sober, along with the help of an alcohol and drug recovery center like Mark Houston Recovery, the sky's the limit.

Making the Right Decisions to Achieve Sobriety

When we drank and/or used drugs, our addiction was our priority. We built our lives around feeding our habit, doing whatever it took to get alcohol or drugs. And now, as we decide to become sober, we should do whatever it takes to maintain our sobriety. Every decision we make, even if it seems trivial, involves two (or more) distinct choices. This is no different when it comes to getting sober - either we choose the path to sobriety or we don't. And since our goal is to become sober, we must choose the right path, the path that doesn't include temptation or association with friends or family who don't understand our quest to break free from addiction. The bottom line is, to reach our goal of being sober, we shouldn't drink or use drugs, no matter what. By making sobriety our priority in everything we do, life will begin to make sense again, and our daily activity will become more purposeful.

The Priority of Becoming Sober

It's important to realize that though you may have other problems, addiction to alcohol or drugs is your primary problem. And your other problems will only continue or get worse if you don't address the main problem. Sobriety must become the most important thing in your life if you truly want to become free from addiction. Change anything in your life that threatens your sobriety, whether it's relationships in your life, your job, hobbies, places you frequent, or habits you have. Achieving sobriety means that you can have everything that life has in store for you. But losing or never attaining sobriety means that you stand to lose everything else, including life itself. The cycle of addiction can be replaced by the cycle of sobriety: realizing and accepting you have an addiction to alcohol or drugs, and making sobriety the primary issue in your life. Mark Houston Recovery can help you on your journey to recovery. We teach you necessary life skills, how to create energy from the inside out after regaining energy with proper diet and exercise, and how to begin a life of sobriety. Let us help you learn to make sobriety a priority.
