Relapse Trigger #8: Setting Your Expectations Too High And Being Too Hard On Yourself When Things Do Not Progress Perfectly

Lack of self-esteem and self-confidence is one of the main reasons that we become addicted and remain addicted in the first place. When we take on more responsibility than we can handle or set ourselves up for failure, we can quickly lose our self-esteem and self-confidence when things don't work out as planned.

Relapse Prevention Action Plan:

  • Write down a few realistic goals and keep them visible. Hang them on the refrigerator if you need to! Examples include “I will take a walk today.” “I will call a friend this week.” “I will read at least a chapter a day in my book.”
  • When things do not go as planned, strive to remind yourself how far you have come. Setbacks do not define your recovery. How you handle them will.
