Relapse Trigger #9: Changing Your Routine

Stress and not having a mindset to handle stress is leading factor in the addiction relapse. For many people, having a routine that they adhere to is a way to feel in control of their life. If we feel out of control and overly stressed when our routine is upset, it is important to try and keep to a routine as much as possible, especially in the early days of addiction recovery.

Relapse Prevention Action Plan:

  • Maintaining a set routine is vital to recovery. When your day is filled with set “placeholders” it is easier to get through each minute. Wake up at the same time. Establish a routine after work.
  • Schedule things throughout the week that have to be maintained. Sign up for a training session at the gym three days a week. Join a book club that meets regularly. These types of obligations keep you moving forward one day at a time.
  • Understand that life will not always unfold exactly the way you expect it. We must keep a healthy understanding that we do not control the universe and to develop ways to deal with stress and anxiety when things do not go exactly as planned.
