Relapse Trigger #12: Transferring Your Substance Abuse Addiction to Other Addictions

It is very common for a person to quit one addiction, only to start another. An addiction is anything that is taken to excess and that is causing a disturbance in our life of the lives of our loved ones. Living a healthy life in recovery means creating balance in our life and not giving in to any addictive compulsions.

Relapse Prevention Action Plan:

  • Be aware of the symptoms of other addictions such as constant, intrusive thoughts or feelings of anger or irritability when you cannot engage in certain habitual activities.
  • Make sure that your routine contains enough diversity. Schedule different activities so that it is harder to focus on one hobby. Even an obsession with exercise can become unhealthy!
