The Equality Of Heroin -- Anyone Can Become Addicted

For a year and a half of his adult life, David was consumed with getting high on heroin. A stay at home dad, he decided to try the drug one day. Having the frame of reference of two of his closest friends being addicts, he saw the toll it was taking on their lives. Despite that, despite everything he know about the harmful effects of the drug, he decided to try it one day rationalizing that it could help him ease the chronic pain he had in his back and from headaches he had been getting since he was a teenager. David was in his 30s with a young child, a solid freelance job, and perfectly stable family life before this began. This is not your typical heroin addict by any means but the drug makes no such distinction. For David, his desire to feel better, to feel "normal" so that he could be a more active parent, that was the appeal was for him. (the regular medication he had tried, had affects that he did not enjoy) That was also where entrance down the dark road of addiction began. Mark Houston Recovery knows that once you're on that road, it becomes increasingly difficult to turn around. The further down you go, the more this addiction slowly begins to consume every part of your life. Our goal is to help you turn around and head toward the light. The journey will be difficult no doubt but it's one that you will be glad you took.

Trying To Control Your Heroin Addiction -- An Exercise In Futility

Once David realized in his mind  how helpful heroin was in easing the back pain and the headaches he had come up with a "plan" to not get addicted. He would stagger his intake so his next dose would be a few days later. In the meantime he could continue his duties as a dad and writer.  This plan obviously did not work because his efforts to use rational thought for a drug that creates a chemical dependency would not work. What began as getting high every few days starting to creep into the weekend. For people like David who try to come up with some sensible rationale for what they do, we know that the reality is that there is no "sense" to it.  The sense that you get back in your, the understanding of what exactly this drug does to your mind and body is crucial to our recovery process. Unfortunately it's only after recovery that most people understand how what they thought was something the "couldn't happen to them" like "becoming a junkie" could and can happen to anyone. But so can recovery.

You Can't Sop Alone -- The Right Way To Recovery

When David started taking his kid with him to buy drugs, when his wife came home and found him passed out on the floor with a needle sticking out of his arm from, this was the bottom. Climbing back to the top would be harder that he ever realized. After trying three times unsuccessfully, one time cold turkey, David finally found and stuck with a program that cleansed his system of the drug and got him not just free of the addiction but also got him the opportunity to maintain and continue his recovery well after he left the program. At Mark Houston Recovery, it's not just about the time you spend being a resident. It's about what happens after you leave. If you don't continue the process of lifeong recovery with some structure and managed care in place, then you stand a greater chance of not succeeding. Success in recovery is not just about how many times you relapse, but that you contiue a life free of addiction in everything you do. We want to have a chance to give you back that life.
