Trauma And Addiction -- How They Are Connected

There are many ways people deals with trauma like a severe industry or the loss of a loved one or child. Among the variety of ways people don't process  trauma or not deal with it is through sleeplessness, anxiety, and anger. For many, these feelings and issues, if left unresolved leads them to seeking other ways to counteract them through self-medication of alcohol or drugs. Essentially someone who survives a traumatic experience or has been witness to trauma has to deal with severe emotional and psychological pain and in their mind, they rationalize that the euphoria or pleasant feeling they get from drugs or alcohol are the ideal remedy to combat those feelings. Without the right support and therapy the addiction prevents them from dealing with the trauma the way they should. The residents at Mark Houston Recovery have had to deal with many of their own issues leading to addiction and for many of them being traumatized was the trigger that took them down the path of alcohol or drug abuse. Our goal is to get them on the path to recovery.

The Links That Connect Trauma And Addiction

Through no fault of their own, someone who has survived truama or a victim of trauma is at greater risk of developing some type of addiction and vice versa. The challenge for us at Mark Houston Recovery is to find effective treatment for our residents who are dealing with both.  It's not a simple task by any means. Addicted survivors of trauma have to deal with a all the issues that addicts are going through in addition to all the issues that they trauma sparked. The emotional impact of past or present trauma often times gets worse in early recovery. The emotional pain, if not addressed, can become unendurable, heading to problems with chronic relapsing.
