Mark D. Houston and Floyd Henderson are the co-authors of the highly acclaimed addiction recovery book “A Twelve Step Journey to Self Transformation.”
The book transpired after 12 step program member Floyd Henderson tracked Mark down for help and support after hearing Mark talk on tape about his personal turbulent recovery process which sounded very similar to his own.
The two formed a mentorship relationship. Over the next several years, Mark and Floyd worked through each step, documenting the process in an incredibly personal and candid manner that readers say is unlike any other recovery book.
In its pages, readers will take an intimate journey through each of the 12 steps through the eyes of Floyd the illogical addict and Mark, his straightforward mentor. As the book progresses readers, have the chance to watch Floyd’s thoughts about himself and his addiction become more logical and genuine.
“Since I began asking my clients to purchase a copy of this book and started using its format in my groups, I have witnessed them becoming more involved in their own healing process and gaining considerably more insight at a faster pace. They have been more willing to admit their role in their life circumstances and have expressed appreciation at the opportunity to work with the approach used in this particular book.”

Through the pages of the book, readers see a first-hand account of Floyd’s transformation from addictive thinking to a sober mindset. Working through each of the 12 steps readers journey through Floyd’s skepticism and excuses for working through each step, then Mark’s analysis of his “insane” addiction-scarred thinking, and finally a dialog of the two working through the solution together.
The latter half of the book focuses on the principals that Houston says he realized too late after becoming sober–dealing with the ruin of a life destroyed by years of destructive addiction.
The final portion of the book talks about topics that recovering addicts must address in their journey through addiction recovery such as physical sanity, financial sanity, emotional sanity, and spiritual sanity along with techniques, ideas, and practices that readers can embrace to build a complete and satisfying life after sobriety.
The Mark Houston Recovery Center is the manifestation of the principals of this book. The Drug and Alcohol relapse prevention center’s mission is to help men recover and lead healthy, productive lives after being consumed by addiction using the principles outlined in A Twelve Step Journey to Self Transformation.
A Twelve-Step Journey to SELF-Transformation is the true story of two men whose paths crossed and whose lives were changed forever after.
Their story is a story of transitioning from a seemingly hopeless state of misery to reaching the state of peace in which they live today.
It is a story of two men whose lives degenerated to a point where they were useless to themselves and others; where on the brightest day they could see only darkness; where the thought of no life seemed more appealing than the thought of living another day.
From those depths of despair, they rose to the heights of joy and happiness. This is the story of their past that took them to that point, of their struggling against the odds of ever recovering from addiction, of the actions they took that changed their lives and subsequently impacted thousands of others, and of their coming out the other side of a long and dark tunnel to emerge into the bliss of living full, productive, and useful lives.
