Understanding Interventions And How They Relate To Drug Addiction

One of the most difficult things that any one of us will go through in our lifetime is watching a loved one or friend struggle with a drug or alcohol addiction. And while drug abuse or alcoholism may be apparent to some, it is not always as obvious to others. Therefore, you must ask yourself the following questions to figure out whether you or someone else is a drug/alcohol addict:

  • Do I need to use drugs or alcohol just to get through my day?
  • Do I consume alcohol in the morning?
  • Does my drug use or alcohol use coincide with stress or some stress-related incident?

If you've asked yourself or the suspected person who is abusing drugs or alcohol, then it may be time to consider having an intervention.

What is an intervention?

An intervention is the act of intervening, or interceding with the intent of modifying the outcome. Related to the area drug addiction or alcohol addiction, interventions are generally used to help treat or cure a particular addiction. At Mark Houston Recovery, it is not uncommon for residents to sit down and discuss their issues with drug addiction or alcohol addiction in an open yet safe manner. Once a drug addict or alcoholic can admit that there is a problem, then he can begin the necessary steps towards leading a sober life.

Family Intervention for Drug and Alcohol Abuse

If someone in your family is addicted to drugs or alcohol, the most important thing that you can do (as a family) is help to maintain that trust with the person. Recognize that a person who is addicted to drugs or who is addicted to alcohol may not necessarily realize that he has a problem. In fact, there are a number of drug addicts who think that there is nothing wrong with the way they are leading their lives. They are in denial.

There has to be an understanding of how your actions as a parent or family member can assist or impede their progress. Becoming knowledgeable about addiction and learning more about what is acceptable, productive behavior goes a long way toward helping a child or an adult with drug and alcohol recovery. Working together with Mark Houston Recovery we can help make a difference in your family member's recovery.

Fight Addiction by Working Together as a Family

Because each family situation is unique, the approaches to how you choose to conduct an drug and alcohol intervention will be designed around your family dynamic, the participants and how they want it done. As the saying goes, what works for one may not work for another. Even though there is about an average two week preparation time for some families it might only take a few days for others. In order for an intervention to run smoothly, it is best to plan ahead and with the advice of a professional (such as Mark Houston Recovery) who is experienced in the intervention process. At Mark Houston Recovery we are willing to be there to support you as your family member goes through the drug recovery process.
